Alexa Rank is a measure of web site popularity. The Alexa Rank ranges from 1 to the number of sites in its database (millions). An Alexa rank of 0 means that the site is not ranked. Owned by Amazon.com, the Alexa Rank utilizes the optional Alexa toolbar that has to be downloaded to track each and every web site visit. Each visit to a site counts as one visit (called ‘reach’); multiple visits to the same site during a day only count as a single visit. Alexa also tracks the number of sub page visits to each web site (called ‘page views’). The Alexa Rank is calculated daily (or so) by using values collected for ‘reach’ and ‘page visits’ and then factors in the values for the prior three months. Updates seem to occur every 3 days or so.

It is important to note that the data that Amazon uses to calculate Rank is entirely dependent on a user having downloaded the Alexa toolbar. For example, if site A has 100 visitors who all have downloaded the toolbar and site B also has 100 visitors, but only 20 of them have downloaded the toolbar, the rank of site A will be much higher than site B. Also, it is worth noting that the Alexa toolbar is not supported by the AOL/Netscape and Opera browsers and secure site visits (https) are not counted.

The Compete Rank is based on Unique Visitors - a metric that counts a person once no matter how many times or how many pages they visit a site in a given month. The Compete analytics are based on robust calculations and estimates of the daily web usage of 2+ million members who are registered with Compete. Like Alexa, the Compete rank should be considered an estimate for sites that have few visitors.
